Creating New Textile Designs

How to make a Repeat Pattern…. For me, every new design begins with drawing.

My latest textile, Tulip Day 548, grew out of a daily ritual I’ve kept for nearly two years: sketching whatever is in front of me at breakfast. Whether at home or away, I always carry a small sketchbook — over time, these books have filled with hundreds of quiet observations.

There’s something special about the hand-drawn line — the immediacy of capturing what’s right in front of you — and these sketchbooks have become an endless source of inspiration for my studio work.

With my textiles, I aim to bring joy and a sense of play into the home. Organic shapes and motifs from nature are at the heart of my designs, helping to bring the outside in.

Each pattern starts as a hand drawing in full repeat, then moves into AVA software, where it’s carefully developed into a seamless repeat suitable for being printed as an interior fabric or wallcovering — flowing effortlessly for curtains, blinds, cushions, upholstery or wallcoverings.

Every design carries a spark from those early morning sketches — a reminder that beauty often begins in small, everyday moments.

I look forward to showing this design as I work on colours ways and have lengths printed.
