My Perfect Creative Afternoon: Rugs & Printmaking

Yesterday was one of those perfect creative days that blend design, texture, and a bit of magic. Two worlds I love — rug design and printmaking — came together beautifully.

Stop One: Rug Designing at Design District

I started the afternoon in the Design District, working on a new rug collaboration. We were exploring textures, colours, and scales to take to a client meeting next week.

Rugs are such a powerful way to bring colour, texture, and pattern into a space. In large, open-plan rooms they can define zones and add focus, while a rug underfoot makes any space feel instantly cosy.

Many of the homes I work on are architecturally designed — full of glass, concrete, and beautiful clean lines — but that can mean sound bounces around. Rugs (and curtains) help soften the acoustics and add warmth and comfort to each area.

For this project, I’m designing a dining table rug, so we played with scale: adding around 75cm on each side allows chairs to move easily while still feeling anchored and comfortable.

We also looked at options for rugs under the sofas. Right now, we’re thinking of bringing the rug halfway under each sofa, but I have a feeling the room could hold a larger one extending past both sides. I’ll make paper templates to take on site — sometimes seeing it full scale is the only way to be sure.
