Colour Me Happy: Creating a Palette That Feels Like You

How to Choose Colours You Absolutely Love for Your Home Interiors

Choosing colours for your home is one of the most joyful—and personal—parts of shaping a space that truly feels like yours. Colour isn’t just visual; it carries mood, memory and meaning. The shades you surround yourself with will influence how you feel every day, so it’s worth taking time to discover what colours you genuinely love.

Below is my simple, creative guide to building a colour palette that feels deeply “you.”

Step 1: Connect Your Moods to Colour

Begin with yourself.

Write a list of the moods you experience or want more of in your home—calm, joy, creativity, rest, energy, comfort. Then, add a colour to each word.

Don’t overthink this. Use watercolours, felt tips, pencils—whatever you have. Work quickly and instinctively. This is not about being “right”—it’s about noticing your immediate emotional response to colour.

You’ll start to see patterns emerge.

Step 2: Explore Real Materials

Once you have a sense of your instinctive palette, spend time with real colours and textures:

  • Flick through paint cards

  • Handle fabric swatches

  • Visit showrooms or markets

  • Build a Pinterest board

  • Tear pages from magazines that make you feel something

As you collect inspiration, pay attention to the emotion behind each choice. Does it feel warm? Uplifting? Grounding? Nostalgic?

This intuitive process is just as important as the colours themselves.

Step 3: Build a Mood Board That Reflects You

Create a physical or digital mood board of the images, colours and textures you’re drawn to. Notice the common threads: Are you leaning toward bold and bright? Soft and muted? Earthy? Fresh? Vibrant?

This mood board becomes a visual foundation you can use when working with a designer or architect—or as a guide if you’re designing your home yourself.

It’s a powerful starting point for creating interiors that make you feel happy, calm and at peace in every room.

My Own Colour Story

I recently spent time refreshing my own palette and re-exploring what colours make me happiest. I’ve shared the results in my latest reel.

For me, it’s all about fresh, bright blues, greens and yellows—colours that feel alive and joyful. I love them in natural linens and wools, and I enjoy mixing patterns and artwork to bring energy into a space.

Almost everything in my home carries a memory: textiles I’ve found on travels, artwork I’ve made myself, pieces by friends, handmade items, gifts. Every object holds a story, and together they form the emotional colour palette of my home.
